Overview

Wagstaff was proud to be appointed to supply, deliver, and install the full furniture and fixtures package for the newly expanded Ulster University campus on York Street, Belfast—part of the landmark Greater Belfast Development (GBD). Valued at over £200 million, this transformative initiative is the most significant education project ever undertaken in Northern Ireland. The development involves relocating Ulster University’s teaching facilities from Jordanstown to Belfast, integrating them with the existing Art College precinct. The new campus is designed to accommodate approximately 10,500 full-time students and staff, offering cutting-edge teaching and learning environments

Project Scope & Phasing

The campus spans four interconnected blocks—BA, BB, BC, and BD—with furniture installation divided into two phases: Phase A: Blocks BA, BB (existing Art College buildings) and BD (new build). Phase B: Block BC (largest phase, scheduled for 2022). Phase A, completed in August 2021, includes comprehensive teaching departments for Fine Art, Jewellery, Ceramics, Printing, and Pottery, alongside administrative offices and vibrant social breakout areas. The blocks range from four to twelve storeys and house lecture theatres, specialist labs, workshops, academic offices, a library, student hubs, support services, and catering facilities.

Sustainability at its best

The project was designed to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating, making sustainable furniture selection critical. Wagstaff worked closely with its supply chain to ensure all materials met stringent environmental standards. In parallel, we collaborated with the client’s appointed Project Management team, WH Stephens, to navigate a complex programme—successfully delivering our scope on time despite delays from the main contractor.

Looking Ahead

Wagstaff is excited to return to site in 2022 to complete Phase B, delivering the largest and final block of this prestigious development. Our involvement in the Ulster University GBD project showcases our ability to manage large-scale, multi-phase installations with precision, sustainability, and unwavering commitment to quality.
