NHS Sackville House

Brief

We tendered for this project through the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) framework along with 10 other competitors, so we were very pleased to hear that we had been awarded this contract in October 2021.

Location: London, South
Design: Wagstaff Design & Fit-Out Team
Sector: Healthcare
Scope: Interior Fit-Out & Design Furniture Solutions, Installation and Delivery Move Management Re-use & Recycle
The Sussex NHS Commissioners decided to consolidate their office estate as the eight former Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) merged to become three large clinical commissioning groups in 2020. Following the pandemic and the adoption of a home working strategy, it was decided that the three main office facilities should be retained and transformed into new and innovative flexible corporate hubs with a variety of modern furniture solutions that facilitate new ways of working.

Having recently supplied furniture to two out of the three sites prior to the pandemic we felt our bid was successful due to our ability to demonstrate how we would reduce the environmental impact of these projects at the same time as cutting costs through our ability to reuse and re-distribute the existing furniture. Across the three sites at Lewes, Hove and Worthing we redesigned the office space to accommodate a more flexible work strategy incorporating more breakout and collaboration areas and reducing the number of fixed workstations to mirror the new number of employees due into the office at any one time.
Excess legacy furniture (mainly desks & task chairs) from the Lewes site were removed, stored and then re-distributed into the other two sites which made financial and environmental sense over purchasing new. We helped to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of the project further by commissioning the manufacture of new locker doors with digital locks as opposed to buying a complete locker unit to achieve the same functionality.

New furniture which we did procure was matched in type and colour scheme for continuity and our interior fit-out team worked their magic to remodel the space which included fitting a new kitchen, updating manifestations, glazed walls to meeting rooms and feature murals to walls to open up the space and breathe new life into the office.  The project was challenging logistically due to the redistribution of the legacy furniture across the three sites which weren’t all run at the same time.
This meant the designs, construction drawings and furniture specifications were needed for approval for all three sites at the same time to ensure the correct number of furniture items were ordered to meet the program deadline. We had two months from order to installation which commenced at the first site, Sackville House early December. All three sites were available for occupancy from mid-February 2022. Installation on all three sites ran smoothly and Sackville House in Lewes is now welcoming employees back into the space.
